Moffat Lift League Cup

Friday night saw Moffat Thistle and Scaur compete in the League Cup Final. Scaur were going in with a strong team despite some poor early season form trying to defend the Trophy they had won last season and were up against a pretty strong Moffat Thistle side. Only 2 minutes in and Moffat had a corner that went to the back post and was headed to the near post where Kevin Wilson pounced to give Moffat Thistle an early lead. After this Scaur started creating half chances but Kevin Wilson and Darren Hunter were marshalling the Moffat defence well. 12 minutes in and Ally Woods controlled the ball 6 yards out from goal and struck for goal where replacement keeper Kevin Jack made an outstanding save to turn the ball round somehow for a corner. Midway throught the first half Moffat Thislte threw in a cross that came back off the bar. Towards half time Kevin Jack then came out and dropped the ball at a cross and after a scramble Scaur had their goalbound effort cleared off the line. In the second half Scaur forced Kevin Jack into 2 good saves in the opening 10 minutes. On the hour Scaur had a corner where after an almighty scramble John Martin struck to give Scaur a deserved equaliser. For the rest of the game the game was fairly even with Scaur perhaps edging on chances created. Extra time was also very close until Callum Saunders latched onto a through ball for Moffat Thistle and as the keeper advanced he passed it into te net finishing well. Scaur though had really played well all night and were twice in the last minute thwarted by Kevin Jack again saving well to ensure Moffat Thistle won the season opening trophy. On Sunday the weather was the big winner with only 1 game beating the weather where Kelloholm gave a strong performance in the Turning Point Trophy First Round beating Ruthwell comprehensively 5-1. Robert O Connor hit a double accompanied by strikes from Scott Milne, Ben Nisbet and Jordan Telfer, Callum Rankine scoring a consolation for the visitors.
