Season starts with Cup Crackers

The Sunday League season started with a bang with the opening League Cup Group ties. Premier Champions Annan Town went to Lockerbie to take on an understrength Black Bull Rovers and Annan took full advantage as they mercilessly rattled in 13 goals. Mark Rogerson top scored with four and Shaun Bell, Liam Grimley and Paul Schoolar all weighed in with doubles alongside counters from John Quinn, Carl Crosbie and David Rowan while Eric Dalglish and Craig Davidson grabbed consolation efforts for Rovers. Moffat Thistle began the defence of the league cup with a fine win in Dumfries, overcoming Nithside by three goals to one thanks to a Stefan Jackson Hat Trick, while Trevor Campbell scored for the hosts. Park Thistle finished last season rock bottom but a seven one win at Kelloholm points to a better campaign this time round. Kelloholm went one up after ten minutes but Jamie Simpson levelled and Robbie Simpson had Park ahead at half time, before winning a penalty which Jamie converted early in the second, Robbie then completed his brace and Laurie Reid, Rab Clyde and Tyler Jamieson all got in on the act. Hole in the Wa were also big scorers. Bruce McQuarrie opened the scoring early and a Joe Jardine penalty seemed to have them in control, Ruthwell had a chink of hope when James Johnstone reduced the arrears on the half hour but the Wa stepped up a gear and Sean Peat and Nicky Paton scored to have them cruising at the interval. There was an OG on the hour mark as Ruthwell tried to stem the flow and then in the last ten minutes Joe Jardine completed his brace and Terry Jardine scored a double of his own for an 8-1 win. Normandy Star and Five Arches Bombers swapped divisions at the end of last season, and there was nothing to split the two in their tie, with David Bradbury and Greg Rice scoring for the Bombers and Aaron Halliday and Dylan Irvine on target for Star. An Equally tight game at Annan was settled by a Matt Coleman strike for Scaur as they edged past FC Annan. Dumfries Athletic started with a win, a Liam Watson hat trick and counter from Lewis Lamb was enough to put Summerhill to the sword. Palmerston Colts also started with a win, as Craig Broadfoot and Jai Harkness scored in the first half along with Steven Dinnell for Morton Youth, but a Craig Kerr goal was the only counter of the second period. Queens Bar and Loreburn Thistle also squared up and Loreburn scored two goals in a minute on the quarter hour mark with Connor Docherty and Lee Taylor netting. Queens pulled one back through Paul Trainor before the break but a Ross Murray strike on the hour restored the two goal cushion and Robert McCormack looked to have put the result beyond doubt with 15 minutes to play. Queens were chasing the game and piled forward, Paul Trainor completed his hat trick but they could not find a leveller and a last minute goal from Jamie Linwood put a gloss on the result for Loreburn.
