Wa stage comeback to claim cup

The first cup final of the new season was played at Marchmount on the 3G surface, and it was Palmerston Colts who flew out of the blocks. With ten minutes on the clock Andy Gilston pounced on a weak back header to skip past the keeper and roll into the net, and ten minutes later it was 2-0 Colts when a near post corner wasn't cleared and found its way into the net. Wa tried to get back into the match but Palmerston were in control and should have added to their lead, but the Wa defence stood firm and five minutes before the break Allan Hunter broke down the left and smashed into the roof of the net to reduce the deficit to a single goal. The second half started with Hole in the Wa on the front foot, and some casual play at the back allowed Sean Peat to steal the ball and fire home the equaliser. Palmerston struggled to recover from that blow having dominated the first half they were pushed back in the second, they did have their chances to snatch the game but could not re-find the passing game which served them so well in the first period and the Wa were looking the likelier side to snatch a winner. It was beginning to look inevitable that penalties were going to be needed to decide a winner, but with three minutes remaining man of the match Joe Jardine received the ball on the left and played it to Nicky Paton on the edge of the box to fire home a goal fit to lift the trophy.
