Bombers lift League Cup

The first silverware of the season was up for grabs as the League Cup Final was played on Friday night, with Palmerston Colts hoping to improve on last seasons runners up spot and Five Arches Bombers also looking for a better result than their Heathhall Garden Centre Final defeat a few months back. Palmerston started brightly but Bombers were looking controlled and dangerous on the counter and both teams had chances in an open first half. Bombers had the ball in the net on the half hour mark as a free kick was headed on to the post and the striker tapped home from an offside position. Colts nearly took the lead just before the interval but a save at the near post denied them and from the corner Bombers broke up the park and Russell Jardine controlled on the edge of the box to lash home the opener. Colts were level in the opening moments of the second half as Craig Kerr was played in one on one and rolled the ball past the keeper. It took barely a minute for Five Arches to go back in front though as a pinpoint Stewart Cobban pass was plucked out of the air by Russell Jardine and dispatched into the net. The match had opened up even more and more goals were certain. just after the hour Ross Kerr saw his effort graze the top of the net for Colts and a minute later Bombers Duncan Smith had a stinging shot beaten away by the keeper. With five minutes to go with the Colts chasing the game the Bombers broke again and a neat move ended with a ball across the box tapped in by Tam Coles. Palmerston responded a couple of minutes later as a corner wasn't cleared and Darren Monteith was on hand to prod home but they could not find a leveller leaving the Bombers to lift the trophy.
