First Division battle intensifies

The focus this weekend was on the first division where the top four separated by only four points at the start of the day played eachother, Summerhill were top of the table at the start of the day but FC Annan knew a win could take them top of the table. Summerhill started strongly and went ahead through a Kyle Gallacher penalty, and could have gone further ahead before Lewis Hawes levelled for FC Annan on the hour mark, the game could have gone either way but the winner came for Annan as Jimmy Reid beat the offside trap and gave Annan the three points. That result meant Queens Bar could go top by avoiding defeat to fourth place Park Thistle who needed the win to get back in the promotion hunt themselves. And it was Queens Bar who drew first blood as a Ryan Beattie cross went in off a defender, Park levelled on 18 minutes as a Dougie Rae shot was saved but the rebound went into the net off a Queens Bar player. Queens Bar went in front early in the second half with Mark Carruthers at the back post to tap in a cross, but Park came back and Chris Bailey smashed in a second equaliser. Thistle then went ahead for the first time with Jamie Simpson sliding in at the back post to score but almost immediately Queens made it 3-3 through Davy Nish. Park went ahead once more as Robbie Simpson curled an effort into the top corner and Kriss Lismanis prevented a draw with a late save when a header looked destined for the net. The result means the top four are separated by a single point at the halfway stage of the season. Also in the First Division Kelloholm hosted Sands and doubles from Kieron O'Connor and James Brown as well as a Graeme Patterson strike kept them within touching distance of the promotion battle, Sands replied through Craig Watson and Danny Heron but are still searching for their first points in their debut campaign. Moffat Thistle continue to set the pace in the Premier as they edged a narrow win at Palmerston Colts, as Adam Henderson bagged a brace either side of a Craig Kerr goal for the Colts. Normandy Star remain second as they eased to a 4-1 win at Penpont, with a Mark Cravens double and strikes from Paul McCann and Jordan Muirhead, Scorer for Scaur was Sandy Bowie. Five Arches Bombers climbed from fifth to third as Duncan Smith, Russell Jardine and Chris Ross were all on target in their win over Nithside with the reply coming from Thomas Nicholson. Hole in the Wa and Morton played out an entertaining match at Jocks Loaning. Islam Kadyrov opened the scoring early for the Wa but Andrew Burgess popped up to level for Morton shortly after. Marc Zutic scored midway through the first half to send the Wa in in front but Andrew Burgess again levelled early in the second half. The Wa took the lead for the third time with twenty minutes to go as Islam scored his second and with Morton chasing the game Hole in the Wa completed the scoring through a trialist. In the final match of the day Annan Town saw off Dumfries Athletic with four Carl Crosbie goals and an effort from Darren Watson, Alister Baird replied for Dumfries.
