Colts and Scaur impress in the cups

The First Round of the Scottish Trophy threw up a mixed bag for our clubs. On Thursday night Riverside and Normandy Star faced off, Riverside grabbed two early goals through Jonny Richardson and Luke Broadhurst and added a third through Connor Docherty before Dougie Rae responded for Star. Luke Broadhurst grabbed his second and Diesel Ferguson scored a fifth to seemingly put Riverside in the draw but after a rash of red cards Normandy took control, Kenneth Meader scored twice and Adrian Hughes hit a long range effort but time ticked out before they could find a leveller. On Sunday Crichton Campus hosted Nethercraigs and after 90 goalless minuted the Dumfries side won the penalty shoot out to progress. Ruthwell Rovers also go into the second round draw after penalties, but they had to Come back from 3-0 and 4-1 down away to Bengal Lancers to do so. John Dalgliesh netted twice and Grant Bryson scored two headers, Owen Brown had put Ruthwell in front before a late equaliser sent the tie to a shoot out. Scaur continued their impressive start to the season with a win at Ardrossan thanks to a Shaun Wood brace and goal from Rab Menzies. Palmerston Colts also progress after an enthralling match against Motherwell Villa. A Ryan Milligan double, superb team goal finished by Craig Kerr and strikes from Jordan Barker and Liam Malcolm were enough to see them through. Summerhill bowed out away to New Stevenston, with Brodie McKerlie scoring in a 3-1 defeat, while Five Arches and Moffat both travelled with threadbare squads and failed to score as they exited the competition, FC Annan were beaten at home by Bardyke Rovers and Dumfries Athletic lost out to Eastend Tower, scoring consolation goals through Alan Lamb, Callum Jess and Nick Bennett. A scheduled league match between Nithside and Annan Town was abandoned after a broken leg for Scott Norman; we wish him a full and speedy recovery. The final midweek card of the year saw the Doonhamer League Cup quarter Finals played, Scaur eased past Annan Town with the last kick of the match, An Own Goal and Rees Brown double cancelling out Danny Lockerby and Dale Muir efforts for Annan. They will face Palmerston Colts in the Semis as the Colts saw off Crichton with a Darren Kerr hat trick and doubles for Jordan Barker, Chris Nelson and Craig Kerr, David Martin, Ryan Milligan and Adam Kerr were all also on the scoresheet as Robert Chambers scored a consolation for Crichton. Five Arches Bombers eased past Morton Thistle with Sean Kevan scoring and an own goal, they will play Nithside who had a Michael McGhie treble, Thomas Nicholson brace and counter from Jason Kirkwood to see off Ruthwell who scored through Luca Pagani.
